Local in NSB – Jane’s Art Center

As I walked down Canal street looking for something to tell the community about I discovered Jane’s Art Center tucked away in the heart of New Smyrna’s historic district. I was captivated by the building’s curb appeal, with beautiful art sculptures near the entrance, and thought to myself “Oh, I must go inside and check that place out”.

Upon entering I was greeted with a warm welcome from Terry & Darcy. They welcomed me with warm smiles that I could see expressed on their faces despite the masks they were wearing. They were very covid conscious and took the precautions to create a safe, fun, and clean atmosphere. They proceeded to tell me about the history and vision they had with the center and the dreams about contributing to the community and future generations. I was hooked. Terry the owner was very kind in offering me a tour of the center. As we walked around she told me about the upcoming events, how they are involved with the community, the different activities they do, the extensive list of artists they feature and much more.

The Inspiration & History of Jane’s:

Jane’s Art Center, the creative idea of owner and local resident, Terry Jane England, is named after her mother, Jane Smith.  A true spirit of New Smyrna Beach, Jane was a single parent; an artist; an environmentalist and an animal advocate, taking in stray and injured animals.  She died unexpectedly in 1979, at age 40.

With local connections and artistic flair, this native to Florida family reaches as far back as 100 years. On any given day, some of the family members work or volunteer at the art center.

Located in the historic art district of New Smyrna Beach, Jane’s Art Center specializes in fine art from both nationally and internationally acclaimed and upcoming artists. The gallery displays both a permanent collection and a rotation of temporary exhibitions every month.  Jane’s eclectic art center celebrates a broad selection of mediums, including ceramic art and a sculpture garden.

Adjacent to their gallery is Jane’s Clay Studio, a complete and comprehensive ceramics center, expanding their role as art educators and securing our place as a leader in the field of ceramics.
