Built 1926, grand opening as Hibbard Hardware this building is a staple on the historic Canal St in New Smyrna Beach. Filled with rich history, this is a landmark to any well known local. What was once a T.V. retail and appliance store ‘Jones Electric’ is now a present day Furniture & creative decor 2 story showroom know as Southern Trends.
“This place is massive” I thought as I walked through the door. It was definitely a different vibe than what I’ve seen online. With inventory constantly changing for new looks, colors and style everything is sold right off the floor. I loved the inventory they had when I arrived. Looking on a computer screen of the website does not do justice to actually being there in person to see, touch, hear and feel the ambiance of what could be my new living room, bedroom or dining room set.
Three generations have made this place a truly inspirational story of NSB local family business. In 1984 Glenn Jones Sr. took over the business in this very building that his parents, Roy and Helen Jones, operated their retail TV and Appliance store in, known as ‘Jones Electric’. So a Jones has been in this location for over 60 years. They definitely put a good meaning to “keeping up with the Joneses.” Glenn Jones Jr. & Cindy joined the company in 2008 and took over the family business in 2018 with intentions to keep it a unique location in our beloved town of New Smyrna.
Glen Jr. mentioned to me, that what makes Southern Trends different from a chain store, aside from the furniture, is the fact that they don’t work on commission. They also use local delivery teams which allows them to offer local customers delivery for FREE as well as Free Lay away. Mostly the Jones Family is running the showroom, but they also have local employees like Debbie, who has been there for 30 years, who has a real knack for making you feel like you’re at home.
This establishment takes pride in what they do & it shows. They go above and beyond to help everyone that walks in. “We take special orders on any piece here, we can change out fabric & frame to accustom anyone’s needs. We enjoy making our locals happy.” -Cindy told me with a smile.
With a warm welcome when I walked in, to a heart felt goodbye when I left, this place touched my heart in so many ways not only because of the nautical decor and vast furniture options but because of the beautiful story of 3 generations of local NSB family business that actually cares about making your home look great!
